Description:
Plasmodium is an obligate intracellular parasite belonging to the protozoan phylum apicomplexa. It shares the the common morphological features of the apicomplexan parasites. Five common Plasmodium cause malaria in humans (P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. knowlesi, P. vivax, P. ovale), and are responsible for about a million deaths per year, mostly of children under 5 years. The invertebrate hosts, female mosquitoes, transmit the sporozoites to intermediate vertebrate hosts via the blood meal, which initiates the asexual part of the life cycle of Plasmodium. The majority of sporozoites reach the liver, where they infect hepatocytes and produce merozoites, which invade erythrocytes. Subsequent generations of merozoites are released into the blood stream. Concurrent with the release of merozoites, the ruptures of the parasitized red blood cells cause malaria symptoms. A fraction of merozoites develop into micro- and macro-gametocytes. Gametocytes enter its mosquito host during the blood meal and develop into gametes in the mosquito mid-gut.
